Program to increase the mobility of German students
The PROMOS program was set up in 2010 to enable German universities to award scholarships for shorter stays abroad for their students. Information on this can be obtained from the FHDW International Office.

What are the goals of the program?
The aim of the PROMOS program, which is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Science (BMBF), is to increase the mobility of students at German universities. PROMOS supports students with up to six-month scholarships for stays abroad.
What can be supported?
PROMOS supports study, practical and language stays of students worldwide through partial scholarships, travel grants, course fee lump sums, lump sums for tuition fees and grants towards accommodation costs (for study trips). Funding beyond six months is not possible. The following measures can be funded:
- Study grants (1 to 6 months)
Funding is available for both short study visits (e.g. for final theses) and study visits of up to six months, e.g. semester visits by students. Doctoral students cannot be funded in this program track. Semester scholarships in the Erasmus area can only be funded in exceptional cases.
Internships (6 weeks to 6 months)
Student internships are generally eligible for funding worldwide. Doctoral students cannot be funded in this program track. Internships in the Erasmus area can only be funded in exceptional cases.
Language courses (3 weeks to 6 months)
Language courses for students and doctoral candidates at universities abroad can be funded worldwide.
How does the application process work?
Students from all FHDW campuses (Paderborn, Bergisch Gladbach, Bielefeld, Mettmann and Marburg) can apply twice a year via the International Office (IO). The IO will inform all students of the next application deadline in good time by e-mail.
The selection criteria include:
- Academic achievements
- Justification / Motivation
- Language skills of the target country
- Proof of intercultural skills, if applicable
Therefore, the application documents include the CV, the application form (provided by the IO), a letter of motivation (1 to 2 A4 pages) and copies of the FHDW certificates.
