Smart Dyke Maintenance (SmaDeWa)

Innovative sensor solutions for reliable dyke monitoring

As part of the funded research project SmaDeWa, supported by the EU and the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, we are working on the development of innovative sensor concepts for monitoring dykes. Dykes play a key role in protecting people and infrastructure, particularly in view of the challenges posed by climate change.

Traditional inspection methods, which are mainly based on manual and visual inspections and height measurements, cannot capture all potential risks. Therefore, SmaDeWa aims to integrate modern technologies to increase the safety of our dikes. By combining advanced sensor technology, finite element simulation and artificial intelligence, we are creating more precise and continuous monitoring capabilities for both old and new dikes.

An interdisciplinary team from RWTH Aachen University, the company topocare and the University of Applied Sciences (FHDW) is combining hydraulic engineering and digital expertise to develop a practical system for effective dyke monitoring.
